So You Got Into a Prestigious College…Or Not.

If you’re a senior, it’s probably getting close to that time where you’re starting to think about where you want to apply to college. Maybe if you’re a sophomore or a junior you’re already thinking about this too. Or even if you’re a freshman (this was me…).

Seniors are probably getting asked these two questions often: “Where are you going to college?” and “What are you doing in college?” These questions seem to go hand-in-hand, and yet so often people forget that.

Here’s the thing that bothers me: when people talk about some colleges like they’re better than others. When people say things like, “All of my students went to really good colleges this year. None of them went to (insert name of local college here).” Or when people look down on those who are going to community college as though they are not good enough for “regular” colleges.

The college you go to should match what you feel God is calling you to. You don’t necessarily need to try and get into an Ivy League school if that school doesn’t fit your goals and what you want to do with your life. If a community college is what best suits your lifestyle and your goals right now, that doesn’t make you any less of a person than anyone else.

Wherever you go to college is where God wants you. You don’t somehow have to guess His will and then make sure you do everything right or otherwise your life is screwed. No, you will end up wherever His will for you is. If His plans for you mean that you end up in a small local college or somewhere less prestigious, then trust that He has everything under control.

Don’t let people’s opinions of you become the main reason for choosing a college. Focus on where you feel God is calling you to and which colleges best suit your needs and goals.

Yes, I realize that I’m only a sophomore in high school. But this is something that has been on my heart for a long time and I felt like I needed to share it.

love, grace

Thanks for the post Grace! I always think it is weird if people go to a big college right off the bat because it is so much more expensive and everyone basically learns the same thing in the first 2 years I am told! But hey, if that is where they are supposed to be! 😉 I actually chose NOT to go to college right away after high-school and when I do go (in about 2 more years) I am going to go to our community college to start! (At least that is the plan so far!) Good for you for starting to give college a thought! It will be easier to go to where God is calling you to go when you are already thinking that it’s doesn’t matter what other people think, this is MY decision!
